Course synopsis: The American Heart Association (AHA) built this course for ACLS certified healthcare providers who have the need to refresh their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. This course is composed of two parts.
- HeartCode ACLS Part 1 is an online comprehensive course purchased for $120, accessed, and completed at http://www.onlineaha.org.
- Part two is an instructor-led course review session of hands-on skills where students practice and complete various skills. A written evaluation is also part of this course.
Course Objective: ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. Students engage in simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team, and as a team leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care; recognizing and initiating early management of peri-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest; identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes; recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care; ACLS algorithms; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.
Audience: For emergency, intensive care or critical care healthcare providers such as physicians, nurses, paramedics, EMT’s, respiratory therapists, and other professionals who may need to respond to a cardiovascular emergency.
Prerequisites: Students must be previously certified as an American Heart Association; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider to enroll in this refresher course.
Attendees are required to provide their AHA ACLS provider card and the online course completion certificate prior to registering for their “Part Two” hands-on review, skills, and written evaluation.
Certification: Students who successfully complete both parts one and two of the ACLS Refresher course will receive an AHA/ACLS course completion card that is valid for two years.
